Magpie Geese or Pied Geese inhabit swamps and wetlands in northern Australia. This photo was taken at Corroboree Billabong enroute to Kakadu National Park (NT).
These large black and white birds are most likely seen in huge numbers honking their way across the sky at last light. Their eggs are found in floating nests in the latter part of the wet season and it is these that are hihgly prized not only as a delicacy but for their high nutritional value.
They are about 3 times the size of duck eggs and quite similar in taste.
