Freshwater Turtle, as pictured here at Australia Zoo, provided an oily meat with a strong chicken like flavour and was traditionally cooked upside down on hot coals. They live in swamps, lagoons and billabongs and were caught by the women who waded into the water and felt around for their smooth hard shell.
In 1990, Australia Zoo’s Steve Irwin discovered a rare species of freshwater turtle on the Burdekin River, Queensland. Today, habitat destruction and pollution are threatening their existence. Go and visit them at Australia Zoo
